I am continually surprised by people who think that I, as a biologist, should extend any courtesy whatsoever to creationists.

I don't think that you, as a biologist OR just as a person, need to extend any courtesy whatsoever to the bogus ideas of creationism, anymore than you would to any other bogus ideas, like the idea that the earth is flat or light colored skin is superior to dark colored skin or any other cultural myths. Creation stories are just that - stories. They have anthropological value but none would (using logical thinking) seriously be regarded as factual.

Do I like watching "the story of love" part of Hedwig & the Angry Inch? Of course! Do I believe that Zeus really split us apart from our other half? Of course not.

Well, not to worry. I don't think I've ever been accused of being too nice to people who have wrong ideas. But I think it's especially obnoxious with creationism, because there are three possibilities.
1. They think I'm so terrible at my job that I don't even know how terrible I am.
2. They think I am engaged in a global conspiracy to defraud the public.
3. They have an insane amount of cognitive dissonance going on.

I vote cognitive dissonance. Some days I think one needs an unhealthy dose of cognitive dissonance in order to survive. Cultural beliefs (or things you don't even know you believe but you subconsciously do because of the culture you were surrounded with as your brain developed) clash with logical thought quite a bit. I mean, feminism - case in point. I suppose cultural peer pressure adds to that too, for (well, against) feminish and for religion. I mean, it says "In God We Trust" on our fucking money.
